Brooks Beast Casimir Loxsom Smashes 600-Meter World Record, Sets Standard for 2017 Racing

Loxsom’s world record shines in an already bright weekend for Brooks Beasts team

SEATTLE – Jan. 31, 2017 – Brooks Beast Casimir Loxsom broke the 600-meter run indoor world record over the weekend at the Penn State National meet with a display of commanding athleticism and a heightened caliber for competition. Loxsom’s time of 1 minute, 14.91 seconds shatters his own American record (1:15.33) as well as the world record, set just eight days prior to his race by Emmanuel Korir (1:14.97).

"Regardless of the season or event, there is something special about being the only person to ever do something. I'm extremely excited with the accolade!” said Loxsom. “I was thrilled that I was able to close fast. It means my strength is in a great spot, and it should translate over to more success this year.”

Loxsom’s world record performance at his alma mater kicked off the 2017 racing calendar for the Beasts, eight of whom competed in the same weekend in races across the country. Team rookie Baylee Mires set a personal record in the indoor 800, lowering her previous 2:06 to 2:04 at the University of Washington Invitational. The University of Washington is her alma mater.

“Cas has always had a great blend of speed and stamina, and I knew he could do this. I’m proud to see his offseason work pay off in such a big way,” said Brooks Beasts Head Coach Danny Mackey. “He’s just about to tap into the bulk of his training for the year, so his world record is especially promising in terms of what’s to come for him this season and also for the rest of his Beasts teammates.”

The Brooks Beasts compete next at the Millrose Games on Feb. 11. Loxsom and teammate Katie Mackey will go on to run in the IAAF Müller Indoor Grand Prix on Feb. 18.

Brooks sponsors professional athletes like Loxsom to inspire runners everywhere and to invest in the sport of running. Since Brooks created the Brooks Beasts in 2013, the team has grown and now includes Olympic-level, world-leading running talent. Other investments into the sport include supporting the marathon team the Hansons-Brooks Original Distance Project, the Inspiring Coach of the Year Awards which recognize coaches who create meaningful change in their communities and the Brooks Booster Club which supports underfunded high school track and cross country teams.
